Ottawa Jan 20, 2026: Hindu community leaders and members from Montreal and Ottawa came together to honour MP Anthony Housefather for his pivotal role in proposing an amendment to Bill C-9 to remove the Swastika from the bill’s language. This amendment reflects a significant step toward recognizing the deep cultural and spiritual significance of the Swastika in Hindu tradition.

The event was organized by the Hindu Canadian Foundation (HCF) and saw participation from community members across various spheres. The delegation was led by Shri Rakesh Kumar Sharma ji, HCF member and former Vice Chairman of Hindu Mission of Canada. He was joined by prominent leaders including Kumaresan Muthukrishnan (Freedom From Poverty Foundation & National Executive of Canada India Global forum of Canada), Ranjit Kumar Balan (All Montreal Malayali Associates), and Kishor Patel (Ramji Temple), who collectively expressed gratitude for MP Anthony’s efforts in advocating for cultural understanding.

During the gathering, MP Anthony also engaged in a video conversation with Mr. Arunesh Giri, President of HCF. The discussion highlighted the grassroots efforts undertaken to educate policymakers about the Swastika’s sacred symbolism in Hinduism, distinct from its misuse in other contexts. MP Anthony emphasized the importance of cross-party support and acknowledged how sustained advocacy helped lawmakers appreciate the need for this differentiation.
The Hindu Canadian Foundation commends all organizations, leaders, and community members who played a role in this success. This accomplishment highlights the strength of collaboration and dialogue in forming inclusive policies that honor cultural heritage.
HCF is dedicated to raising awareness and enhancing understanding among communities. Together, we strive for a Canada that embraces diversity and unity.
