- Vasant Panchami: Honouring Maa Saraswati and Welcoming the Season of Renewal
Vasant Panchami marks the arrival of Vasant Ritu, the season of spring, and is dedicated to Maa Saraswati, the embodiment of knowledge, wisdom, music, arts, and purity. For thousands of years, Hindus have observed this sacred day to invoke clarity of mind, refinement of character, and the blessings of learning. For Hindu Canadians living in Canada, Vasant Panchami becomes a powerful reminder of our civilizational roots an opportunity to pass forward the reverence for education, culture, and spiritual discipline that has sustained our community for millennia. Why Vasant Panchami Is Celebrated? 1. To Invoke the Blessings of Maa Saraswati Maa Saraswati represents the highest form of knowledge, vidyā that liberates, not merely informs. She is the guiding force behind learning, creativity, speech, and righteous understanding. Hindus celebrate Vasant Panchami to seek Her blessings for clarity, intellect, and the ability to walk the path of Dharma. 2. To Mark the Beginning of Vasant Ritu In Bharat (Land of Hindus), this festival coincides with the blossoming of nature, mustard fields turning yellow, new leaves sprouting, and the environment becoming vibrant. Even in Canada’s winter landscape, the festival reminds us of renewal, hope, and the eternal cycles of nature. 3. To Begin New Learning Traditionally, Vasant Panchami is considered the most auspicious day to begin education, music, arts, or any intellectual pursuit. Children often start writing their first letters ( Akshar-Abhyas ) on this day. 4. To Celebrate the Harmony of Knowledge and Nature The festival unites two powerful forces, Saraswati’s wisdom and spring’s rejuvenation , symbolizing that learning must be fresh, pure, and ever-growing. Rituals of Vasant Panchami: 1. Saraswati Puja Devotees present books, musical instruments, pens, and learning tools in front of Maa Saraswati’s Pratima. These objects remain untouched during the puja, representing the surrender of ego and the request for divine guidance. The celebration takes place in various institutions, organizations, and temples throughout Canada. Courtesy - Triveni Mandir , Brampton 2. Wearing Yellow Yellow represents purity, auspiciousness, and the blossoming mustard fields of spring. Devotees wear yellow clothes, prepare yellow sweets like kesari halwa , and offer yellow flowers to the Goddess. 3. Akshar-Abhyas (Initiation into Learning) Young children are introduced to letters, mantras, or basic writing. This ritual signifies that all learning begins with humility and divine blessings. 4. Chanting Saraswati Mantras Reciting mantras such as “Om Aim Saraswatyai Namah” purifies speech, sharpens intellect, and invokes inner clarity. 5. Offering Prasad and Bhog Simple satvik offerings, fruits, sweets, and milk-based preparations, are offered to the Goddess and shared with the community. 6. Community Gatherings Temples and community organizations, host pujas, cultural programs, and educational activities to bring families together in devotion and learning. Significance for Hindus in Canada, Preserving the Value of Vidyā: In a fast-paced world, Vasant Panchami reminds Hindu families that true education is not only academic achievement but the cultivation of wisdom, humility, and righteous conduct. Strengthening Cultural Identity Celebrating Saraswati Puja in Canada ensures that children grow up understanding the sacredness of learning and the beauty of Hindu traditions. Uniting the Community Festivals like Vasant Panchami bring together diverse Hindu communities, North Indian, South Indian, Nepali, Bengali, and others, under the shared reverence for Maa Saraswati. Passing Dharma to the Next Generation Through rituals, stories, and collective worship, children learn that knowledge is divine, learning is sacred, and culture is a responsibility. Jai Maa Saraswati. Shubh Vasant Panchami to All. - HCF’s 3rd Annual Shri Ram Rath Yatra Inspires Devotion Across Canada - Shri Ram Mandir Restoration, Celebrating Faith, Unity, and History
The Hindu Canadian Foundation (HCF) proudly celebrated a powerful milestone this year with the 3rd Annual Shri Ram Rath Yatra 2026 , a spiritual journey dedicated to celebrating the historic restoration of the Shri Ram Mandir in Ayodhya on Jan 22 , 2024 which was destroyed in 1528 CE by Islamic Invaders. For 1.5 billion Hindus across the world and for more than 1.4 million Hindu Canadians, this moment represents centuries of resilience, devotion, and hope finally fulfilled. This year's Yatra was dedicated to "Hindus in Bangladesh," who are enduring severe inhuman suffering, including killings, and the torture of children and women, with houses being burned under the current regime. The Hindu Canadian Foundation dedicated this year's Yatra to the Hindus in Bangladesh and requested protection for them from the Canadian government. Since the Mandir’s restoration ( पुनर्निर्माण) on January 22, 2024, HCF has embraced a solemn responsibility: to ensure that this sacred day is remembered by present and future generations as a symbol of justice, cultural pride, and spiritual awakening . The annual Rath Yatra is our way of bringing this historic celebration to Canadian soil, uniting temples, families, and communities in devotion to Bhagwan Shri Ram. This year’s Yatra was our most vibrant and a full day of bhajans, blessings, and heartfelt welcomes across multiple cities and temples. Journey of Devotion Across Mandirs, A Powerful Start at Hindu Sabha Mandir , Brampton ( 9225 The Gore Rd, Brampton, ON L6P 0B6): The Yatra began at Hindu Sabha Mandir, where hundreds of devotees gathered in the early hours during extreme weather conditions (wind chill of –12°C & wind 60 km/h), chanting “Jai Shri Ram” with unshakable energy. The temple management and Shri Madhu Lama extended warm hospitality, offering Prasad and breakfast to all. The atmosphere was filled with devotion as bhajans, Hanuman Chalisa, and Aarti set the tone for the sacred journey ahead. Shri Madhu ji Flagged off Rath Yatra by waving "Hindu Bhagwa Flag" to Triveni Mandir in Brampton. Triveni Mandir Brampton : A Community United in Bhakti ( 20 Daviselm Drive, Brampton, ON L6X 0E6) : Our next stop, Triveni Mandir, welcomed the Yatra with open arms. Shri Yudhishthir Ji & Temple priest led a soulful Bhajan Sandhya and Hanuman Chalisa, drawing devotees from the surrounding neighbourhood. The temple resonated with spiritual warmth as families joined in singing and prayer, a very mesmerizing Bhakti Environment was created for Shri Ram Rath Yatra, all devottess has much needed snacks break to get recharged. Canadian Sanatan Mission Mandir : ( 1635 Sismet Rd Unit 6 & 7, Mississauga, ON L4W 1W5): Youth Leading the Way, at the newly established Canadian Sanatan Mission Mandir in Mississauga, the Yatra was greeted with heartfelt enthusiasm. What made this stop truly special was the lineup of young singers , all under 20 who performed bhajans and Hanuman Chalisa with remarkable devotion. Their voices filled the temple with purity and hope, reminding us that the future of our faith is bright and deeply rooted. The Rath Yatra was greeted with great enthusiasm at the newly constructed temple, which houses an Pratima of Shri Ram brought from Ayodhya. The temple's atmosphere is peaceful. While many people contributed to the temple's construction, one young individual, Suraj, stands out. Despite attending college, he is fully devoted and dedicated to nurturing this temple. Hamilton Hindu Samaj Temple : A Grand and Joyful Welcome ( 6297 Twenty Rd E, Hannon, ON L0R 1P0) : The Yatra then travelled to Hamilton Hindu Samaj Temple, where a beautifully organized welcome awaited. A powerful Bhajan Sandhya and Dhol Swagtam led by President Uma Sharma ji, Saurav Sharma, Samir Mahajan and Karthic Ji, uplifted the entire gathering. The temple committee ensured devotees were cared for with refreshments and warm hospitality, making this stop a memorable highlight. Yugal Kunj Temple , Hamilton: A Divine Conclusion ( 375 Aberdeen Ave, Hamilton, ON L8P 2R7): The final destination was the newly built Suyog Coast Temple in downtown Hamilton. Devotees were welcomed with rose petals, floral offerings, and melodious harmonium-led kirtans. The concluding bhajan session was filled with energy, devotion, and gratitude. A full meal was lovingly served by the temple team, bringing the day to a beautiful close. The Yatra symbolizes the resilience of Hindus worldwide, and the HCF seeks to educate Hindu Canadians. For HCF, the Shri Ram Rath Yatra is more than an event, it is a commitment with purpose. A commitment to ensure that January 22 is remembered not just as a date, but as a symbol of resilience, hope, and justice. A commitment to honour the centuries-long struggle that led to the Mandir’s restoration. A commitment to unite Hindu Canadians in celebration of our shared heritage. Each temple, each volunteer, each devotee who joined us helped transform this Yatra into a living expression of community strength and spiritual pride. Gratitude and the Path Ahead: We extend our heartfelt thanks to all participating temples, their management teams, volunteers, and the countless devotees who made this year’s Yatra extraordinary. - United Against Tyranny: Veer Bal Diwas Inspires Action for Modern Day Atrocities
Brampton, ON, Canada Dec 27 2025: On the occasion of #VeerBalDiwas , the Hindu Canadian Foundation pays tribute to the unparalleled courage and sacrifice of Chhote Sahibzade Baba Zorawar Singh Ji and Baba Fateh Singh Ji. At the tender ages of 9 and 6, these young warriors chose martyrdom over surrendering their faith and Dharma, standing resolute against the brutal attempts at forced conversion by Islamic tyrannical rulers. Their supreme sacrifice in defense of righteousness and religious freedom continues to inspire generations, reminding us of the eternal values of resilience, truth, and unwavering commitment to Dharma. In today's world, we must draw lessons from history and unite against all forms of oppression, religious persecution, and violence targeting innocent communities. This is a profoundly challenging time for religious minorities in Bangladesh, including Hindus, Sikhs, Christians, and others, who are enduring targeted atrocities and threats to their safety and places of worship. The Hindu Canadian Foundation calls upon global leaders, governments, and civil society to speak out boldly and take decisive action against these forces of intolerance that echo the injustices of the past and persist today. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the @HinduSikhCanada for organizing Veer Bal Diwas events, which serve as a powerful reminder of shared heritage, interfaith solidarity, and collective resistance against tyranny. - Canada Must Speak Out on the Killing of Dipu Chandra Das in Bangladesh and Atrocities against Hindus & Other Religious Minorities in Bangladesh
The Hindu Canadian community is deeply distressed by the brutal killing of Dipu Chandra Das, a young Hindu man in Bangladesh whose life was taken in an act of mob violence fueled by misinformation and religious hatred. His death is not an isolated incident, it reflects a pattern of targeted intimidation and violence against minorities in the region. Canada has always stood as a global voice for human rights, pluralism, and the protection of vulnerable communities. At a time when democratic values are under strain worldwide, silence from nations like ours carries consequences. When a young man is killed simply for being who he is, the world looks to countries like Canada to affirm that every human life has equal worth. SIGN Petition NOW "Advocacy Starts with You" We call upon the Government of Canada to: • Issue an official statement condemning the killing of Dipu Chandra Das and calling for a transparent, credible investigation. • Engage diplomatically with the Government of Bangladesh to ensure the safety and dignity of Hindu minorities. • Affirm Canada’s commitment to protecting religious freedom globally, including through parliamentary and ministerial channels. • Stand with the Hindu diaspora, who are grieving and fearful as they witness repeated acts of violence against their community abroad. Canada’s leadership matters. A clear, principled statement from our government would send a powerful message that human rights violations, wherever they occur, cannot be ignored. It would also reassure thousands of Hindu Canadians who look to their government for moral clarity in moments of crisis. Call to the Canadian Community: HCF urges temples, schools, community organizations, and families across Canada to hold vigils in mandirs, homes, neighbourhoods, and institutions. We request all community members to observe two minutes of silence in honour of Deep Chand and in solidarity with Hindus facing violence in Bangladesh. This moment of mourning must also be a moment of collective resolve. Violence against any community, anywhere, is a threat to justice everywhere. We urge you to act with the compassion, courage, and conviction that define Canada’s role on the world stage. HCF Condemns Brutal Killing of Hindu Youth in Bangladesh; Calls for Immediate Action from Bangladeshi and Canadian Authorities While the global community celebrates the holiday season, Hindus continue to face relentless attacks in Bangladesh. - Hindu Canadians Celebrate Landmark Victory in Parliament: Swastika Removed from Bill C-9 as a reference to Hate Symbol
Hindu Canadian Foundation (HCF) is proud to celebrate a significant and meaningful victory in the Canadian Parliament. Members of Parliament, with unanimous support across party lines, have amended Bill C-9 to remove the sacred " Swastika " from the legislation's list of prohibited hate symbols. The word "Nazi" has now been dissociated from Swastika, and references will be made to "Nazi Hakenkreuz" instead. This moment signifies not only a triumph for Hindu Canadians but also a testament to the power of democracy, dialogue, and collective advocacy. For generations, the swastika has been revered in Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and other Dharmic traditions as a symbol of auspiciousness, peace, and well‑being. Yet, in the modern era, its sacred meaning has often been misunderstood, conflated with the Nazi “Hakenkreuz,” and unfairly stigmatized. The amendment to Bill C‑9 corrects this historical error, ensuring that Canada’s laws reflect both the fight against hate and the protection of cultural heritage. This achievement was not won overnight. It is the result of tireless efforts by the Hindu Canadian Foundation, allied organizations, community leaders, and everyday citizens who stood together to defend dignity and truth. From the moment Bill C‑9 was introduced, HCF recognized the urgent need to act. The inclusion of the swastika among prohibited hate symbols threatened to erase centuries of sacred tradition and stigmatize millions of Canadians who hold the symbol dear. Petitions and outreach : Thousands of individuals signed HCF petition , wrote letters, and contacted their representatives to explain the difference between the swastika and the Nazi Hakenkreuz . Community education: HCF organized Events, cultural sessions, and Products to educate Canadians about the true meaning of the swastika. Coalition building: Over 100 allied organizations endorsed HCF’s submission to Parliament, demonstrating the strength of collective action. HCF Delivered Compelling and Influential Testimony to the Justice Committee: HCF President, Arunesh Giri, submitted powerful testimony to the Justice Committee , highlighting the historical, cultural, and spiritual significance of the swastika. The testimony emphasised that banning the symbol would not combat hate but instead perpetuate misunderstanding and marginalisation. https://www.ourcommons.ca/documentviewer/en/45-1/JUST/meeting-12/notice HCF President Arunesh Giri stood before the Justice Committee to present testimony , marking a powerful moment in the advocacy journey. The committee heard from scholars, community leaders, and everyday citizens who spoke with clarity and conviction. Their voices carried the weight of generations, reminding Parliament that laws must be precise, just, and culturally sensitive. One of the most inspiring aspects of this victory is the spirit of cooperation that made it possible. Liberal Party leadership: Liberal Party Members of Parliament played a pivotal role in advancing the amendment to remove the swastika from Bill C‑9. Their openness to dialogue, careful consideration of community concerns, and decisive action exemplify true leadership. Conservative Party and Bloc Québécois support: These parties joined in recognising the importance of correcting the legislation. Their unanimous support reflects a shared commitment to justice. Unanimous vote: In an era often marked by division, this amendment passed with unity. It is a shining example of Canada at its best, where leaders rise above partisanship to protect minority voices and correct historical errors. This victory was not achieved by Hindu Canadians alone. It was strengthened by the solidarity of other communities who recognised the importance of justice and dignity. Jewish organisations: The Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA) and B’nai Brith Canada stood side by side with Hindu Canadians. Their support underscored the shared commitment to fighting hate while respecting heritage. Interfaith cooperation: Leaders from diverse backgrounds joined in affirming that Canada can combat hatred without erasing sacred symbols. Academics and researchers: Scholars provided historical clarity, distinguishing between the swastika and the Nazi “Hakenkreuz.” Their expertise ensured that Parliament acted with knowledge and precision. Why This Victory Matters to Every Canadian: Protecting Heritage: For Hindu Canadians, the swastika is not merely a symbol; it is a living tradition. It adorns temples, homes, and sacred ceremonies. It represents prosperity, auspiciousness, and the eternal cycle of life. To stigmatise it would be to stigmatise the community itself. Fighting Hate Effectively: Removing the swastika from the list of prohibited hate symbols, strengthens Canada’s fight against hate by ensuring that laws target actual instruments of hatred rather than misidentified cultural symbols. Affirming Democracy: This victory proves that democracy thrives when voices unite. From grassroots petitions to parliamentary debates, every step of the process reflected the power of collective action. Citizens spoke, leaders listened, and justice prevailed. HCF extends heartfelt thanks to: Members of Parliament across all parties who supported the amendment. Allied organisations: over 100 + organisations that endorsed HCF’s submission. Community leaders and everyday citizens who signed petitions, wrote letters, and raised awareness. Jewish organisations, including CIJA and B’nai Brith Canada, for their solidarity. This amendment is more than a legislative change; it is a beacon of justice. It sends a clear message: Canada can fight hate without erasing heritage. It affirms that voices matter, that cultural dignity must be protected, and that democracy is strengthened when communities stand together. For Hindu Canadians, this moment will be remembered as a turning point. It restores the swastika to its rightful place as a sacred symbol and ensures that future generations can celebrate their heritage without fear of stigma. Vijay Jain, President of Vishwa Jain Sanghthan Canada, delivered a compelling testimony in Parliament emphasizing the urgent necessity to remove the word "Swastika" from Bill C-9. Watch more here: “Vijay Jain met with James Maloney to discuss the urgent need to remove the Swastika reference from Bill C-9.” “The concern was also raised with MP Marjeet Gill, seeking assurance for the removal of the Swastika.” Looking Ahead - Path Forward: The victory on Bill C‑9 is not the end of the journey. It is the beginning of a renewed commitment to advocacy, education, and unity. HCF will continue to educate Canadians about the swastika’s sacred meaning. Misunderstandings persist, and it is essential to ensure that schools, media, and public institutions present accurate information. This victory demonstrated the power of interfaith and intercultural cooperation. HCF will build on these relationships, fostering dialogue and solidarity across communities. Whenever cultural symbols are misunderstood or misrepresented, HCF will stand ready to defend dignity. This victory sets a precedent for how Canada can balance the fight against hate with respect for heritage. The unanimous amendment to Bill C‑9 is a landmark victory for Hindu Canadians and for all communities committed to justice and dignity. It reflects the best of Canada, where leaders listen, communities unite, and democracy thrives. The Hindu Canadian Foundation celebrates this amendment as a beacon of justice, a triumph of truth, and a testament to the power of collective action. - MP Melissa Lantsman stood in the Canadian Parliament to highlight the escalating violence faced by Hindus in Bangladesh
On December 10, 2025, Conservative MP Melissa Lantsman stood in the Canadian Parliament to highlight the escalating violence faced by Hindus in Bangladesh. Speaking on behalf of petitioners, she drew attention to over 2,000 incidents in 2024 alone, including: • Arson attacks on Hindu homes and businesses • Mob violence and forced displacement against Hindu Community • Sexual assaults targeting Hindu women and girls • Temple demolitions destroying sacred spaces Her statement amplified the voices of oppressed communities and urged Canada to act before it is too late. Congratulations to over a billion Hindus worldwide and the 1.5 million Hindus in Canada on this historic recognition: #Deepavali has been inscribed on the UNESCO Intangible Heritage List. Deepavali, the radiant Hindu festival , is not merely a celebration, it is a timeless embodiment of Sanatan Dharm’s values of truth, victory of good over evil, and the eternal light of knowledge. This recognition amplifies the festival’s global resonance, showcasing the spiritual richness and cultural grandeur of Hindu civilization to the world. May the eternal ideals of Prabhu Shri Ram dharma, compassion, and righteousness, continue to illuminate humanity’s path for generations to come. Another reason for joy is that UNESCO has recognized the festival as Deepavali, not the diluted term Diwali. The Hindu Canadian Foundation has been steadfastly emphasizing the importance of using the authentic name for a very long time. If not the very first, we are certainly among the first few to champion this rightful usage. Post from UNESCO: https://www.facebook.com/share/v/1AhuVzeHmh/ Deepavali inscribed as sixteenth element on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity for the Republic of India. Announced at the 20th Intergovernmental Committee of the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage in New Delhi, Deepavali holds significant meaning for myriad communities, groups and individuals who celebrate the festival in their own ways – as one of the most popular festivals in India. Within communities, elders – inclusive of all genders – play a vital role as custodians of Deepavali and the conduits of intergenerational transmission, while the young adults and children inherit this living heritage. Celebrated across India and beyond, the element provides livelihood support to creative communities and cultural practitioners who continue to enrich it through their diverse artistic expressions. These include diyas, electric string lights, candles, hathris, gharondas, torans/bandhanwars, deity idols and rangoli. During Deepavali, shops and markets see a festive surge – from sweets, snacks and dry fruits to ethnic wear, décor, gift items and jewellery – as the custom of exchanging gifts adds to the celebration. #Deepavali #IntangibleCulturalHeritage #LivingHeritage #20COM #India #SouthAsia
